Each lamp I craft becomes a unique creature, an invented one, a living embodiment of my vision. As I mold clay, I aspire to breathe life into it, to make it come alive with a vitality that defies the material's innate rigidity.
My name is Martu, I was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where the focus on practical career paths overshadowed creative pursuits. As a result, I pursued a degree in law.
At the age of 21, I discovered a passion for ceramics, which began as a hobby but quickly became a significant part of life. Despite a strong desire to pursue art professionally, the prospect of making a living from ceramics seemed distant in Buenos Aires. Nevertheless, the creative journey continued as I balanced various jobs while maintaining a dedication to the craft.
9 years ago, as I approached the completion of my law degree, a pivotal decision was made to relocate to the United Kingdom, seeking new opportunities and a fresh start.
I undertook a diverse range of jobs to support the transition. Throughout this period, ceramics remained a constant passion and source of fulfillment. In 2021, a breakthrough came when I began working with an Argentine ceramicist, an experience that confirmed the potential to pursue ceramics as a full-time career.
Today I work from a remarkable studio located in the vibrant artist community of Kindred. This creative space fosters collaboration and interaction among a diverse group of artists, enriching my practice and contributing to a dynamic artistic environment.
Creating lamps has become a particularly joyful aspect of my work, blending functionality with artistic expression. The process of making each piece brings a sense of fulfillment and happiness. I also find great joy in connecting with fellow makers and artists, sharing ideas, and drawing inspiration from the collective creativity within the makers community.
