Lizzie Scarlett Towndrow
Lizzie has a background in Illustration and Textiles and uses these skills to create playful functional pieces with clay. For the past 10 years, Lizzie has been working with ceramics, exploring the passing of knowledge, skills, and stories through making, interaction, and play, from her South London studio.
Lizzie has always been fascinated by ancient ruins and finds it fascinating how they preserve stories of our past, and whilst they are emblematic of decay and destruction, their continued presence today feels hopeful.
Sometimes ruins are left standing as symbols or lessons for future generations. “I like how that relates to creativity and craftsmanship; artists pass on tactile knowledge and stories through their work”.
There is something kitsch about a souvenir you might buy at the gift shop of a historical landmark or ruin, Lizzie pieces balance between being an artifact and a functional object for the home.
After graduating with a BA in illustration, Lizzie then went on to her MFA degree in Crafts 2016, with patchwork quilting as her main practice ceramics has always been a love and passion, creating slab-built functional homeware pieces each completely unique.
