Hal Haines’ work is vibrant and playful. He likes to combine materials, colours and subject matters to create pieces which tell stories. Everything is made by hand at his studio in the South East of England.
Hal is an artist and designer based in East Sussex. He lives in St Leonards-On-Sea and works in the nearby countryside at his self-built studio. After an 8 year career as a photographer, Hal launched his ceramics in 2020, in pursuit of his desire to create three dimensional, tactile pieces.
Hal’s photography work took him around the world capturing people and places, with a keen interest in visual storytelling.
This has influenced his colourful and illustrative approach to surface decoration. In all his pieces, which now span from ceramics to lighting, textiles to paintings on board and furniture, Hal wants to tell stories. His work references English wildlife, queer culture, folk art and history, often with a playful twist.
Hal studied Communication Design at the Glasgow School of Art. His past clients include Paul Smith, &Klevering, itsnicethat, Barbour, Jil Sander, Burberry, Soho House, Apple and The Hoxton. His pieces have been featured in Vogue, itsnicethat, Living Etc, House and Garden, Homes and Gardens, Frankie, Table Magazine and ES Magazine
